A Van For Rhonda

The special woman in the wheelchair is my mother, Rhonda Fielder.

On December 26, 2016, my mom had a massive stroke that cut off blood supply to the majority of the right side of her brain. Her stroke was so severe she was not expected to make it through the first 48 hours, but she did. However she had a medical complication that caused severe brain swelling and warranted the physicians to place her on hospice- once again expecting her not to make it.

Here we are- 40 days later. Mom is still with us, but the stroke has robbed her of many things. Most of all being the use of her left side. She has lost that completely.  However,  Mom is working hard in her therapy sessions and will soon be released from the hospital.  She will require intense physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy for the next 12 months. Stroke victims can continue to gain functions back up to a year after their stroke.

We are raising money to purchase a full size van with a wheelchair lift to allow our family to transport Mom.

As we make plans to convert our home to be ADA compliant, get her various medical equipment, we are astounded at the price of just the necessities.

Without our own van, it will cost $50/15 minutes of transport. And each therapy session is an hour long-add transport from Rockport to the Hospital Out-patient Rehab (the only place her insurance covers) we are looking at hundreds of dollars a day just to transport her.

A new van with a wheelchair lift can cost $70,000. We are hoping to find a used one- which still costs around $50,000.
