Tough Cookie Bakery Soda Fountain Revival

Tough Cookie Bakery is relocating to the historic Lock Drug Store on Main Street and we still need your help to re-open this historic Bastrop treasure . Also known as the W.J Miley Drugstore, the building has been a fixture for generations growing up in and passing through Bastrop.

For over 100 years, from 1905 until the Lock Drug Store closed in 2013, you could walk up to the original marble countertop and order a milkshake or an ice cream cone while you connected with your friends and neighbors in the community.

Stretching from the dawn of aviation and the automobile through the Great War and prohibition, WW2 and all the soldiers that came through Camp Swift and walked through those same doors and up to that same marble countertop.

There's the baby boomers who as children had their first taste of ice cream at that counter. Then they were teenagers in the 1960s, listening to the Beatles and Elvis on their transistor radios, coming in after school or a Bears football game to share a malt or a Cherry Coke...and all those kids and families through the 70s and 80s and 90s...a not too distant memory for so many thousands of people whose lives have been touched by Bastrop.

Tough Cookie Bakery has been a fixture in Bastrop for not quite as long, but we've worked hard to earn our stripes in this community. It was always our intent to be on Main Street in Bastrop, and when we first came to Bastrop in 2011, we were so very close to opening on Main Street until the Bastrop Complex Fire in September 2011 changed the plans.

Losing almost everything in those fires, a literal bakery's worth of equipment and a lifetime of personal belongings, we knew the only choice was to rise from the ashes and help rebuild our community. And so we did and the community helped us rebuild.

When Tough Cookie Bakery opened next to Neighbor's Kitchen & Yard, it was a labor of love with the help of the community. Friends came together to build everything from the counters to the tables. Restaurant owners loaned us equipment in good faith. Tough Cookie Bakery was able to open to serve the community the highest quality food and incredible service.

We've seen it as our mission to feed people. We've worked hard to provide a safe and welcoming space for crew members and customers and anyone that walks through those doors in search of nourishment for the body and mind.

And now, we need your help again as part of this community.

These funds will be entirely used to help us finish building out Tough Cookie Bakery, Cafe' & Soda Fountain on Main Street. We will use them to add additional equipment and furnishing and necessities to help establish and open the soda fountain for another 100 years. You’ll know that it is all going to local craftspeople and suppliers.

The kids that grew up going to Lock Drug for an ice cream cone haven't been through those doors in over 10 years now. We know it's not too late to reopen those doors and give the future generations the memorable experience that so many generations had before them. It's not too late for the baby boomers to share with their grandchildren and great grandchildren the joy and excitement of a trip to the soda fountain.

Tough Cookie Bakery will bring everything that you love about Tough Cookie now, from all the baked goods to the amazing local coffee, the scratch made breads and cafe' items, the homemade premium ice cream, and of course the pretzel bread.

Imagine, sharing an experience that transcends generations…it’s still possible and we can make it happen as a community.
