If you're reading this, odds are you've seen a headline or two about the alarmingly high maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the United States, particularly among women of color. With the cursory glance at news stories, you probably found yourself asking, why is this so?
Why, indeed.
I, Dominique Remy, and filmmaking partner, Meschida Philip are working on the upcoming film project titled Canary. We will investigate the WHY, through a multidisciplinary approach, why Motherhood in the U.S. serves as the metaphorical canary in the societal coal mine. With the insights gathered from historians, anthropologists, sociologists, economists, medical professionals - Canary, aims to connect how the State, Cultural/Social influences, Environmental and Economic inequalities factors into the conditions of the lives of people who bear children. Most importantly, how these factors increase risks of mortality and morbidity and inhibit safe childbearing and child-rearing experience in the U.S. Maternal mortality and morbidity, is symptomatic of a larger problem which we will elucidate through film.
This, undoubtedly, a huge undertaking. However, not impossible. With your contribution, we can continue the laborious pre-production process and begin to gather footage prior to 2020.
