Keep My Mom In Her Home

She had a massive heart attack a year and a half ago, and after a long, hard recovery, is now in overall good health. But she needs my help on a daily basis, and after my father and brother’s passing, I am her only immediate family and sole caregiver. I recently moved in with her to look after her. It is a small condo, but she is very happy here. We live modestly with just our dog, Molly.

Unfortunately, without going into too much detail, we have been hit with many financial setbacks - medical costs, old debt, an assessment on the condo, car expenses, a high monthly HOA, rising insurance and property taxes, etc - and even with the salary from my job, it is becoming difficult to survive and keep her in her home. A leveraged reverse mortgage makes selling not a good option.

I love my mother very much and it is my honor to take care of her, but I am feeling more and more desperate. I just want to make her last years as comfortable and happy as possible. I feel like I am letting her down. I have never done anything like this before, but I am reaching out for any help we can get just to help us keep her place.

At age 60, I am starting to have some health issues myself, which, along with Medicaid restrictions, may make it difficult for me to continue to work as I do now.

It’s a tough situation and I am feeling overwhelmed.
