From 1819 through the mid 1990's the US Federal government, in partnership with
Christian churches all across North America, removed Native American children from
their families and tribes. These children were forcefully sent to industrial boarding
schools designed and with the intent to assimilate and indoctrinate the Native
American children of all North American tribes.
As the boarding school assimilation/extinction program failed, a new program was put
into place: "Adopt An Indian" and the tribal children continued to face forced removal
from their families and tribes.
Many of these practices are still in place in the year 2024. Because there are not
enough adoptive homes throughout the USA, many of these Native American children
spend their entire lives in the foster care system, wards of the state and with no
connection to their biological families or tribes.
At the age of 18 many of these children "age out" of the foster care system, only to be
put out on the streets with literally nothing but the clothes on their backs, left to fend
for themselves in a big scary world of oppression, racism, and poverty and without any
help or resources to survive.
With nowhere to go and a need to survive, these children are left to turn to the streets,
from gangs to car theft, arson, armed robbery, drugs, and guns, where they eventually
end up in jail/prison or dead, blamed for their criminal behaviors by the same society
that took them away and then threw them away, from the security, confidence,
experience, and love of heritage and cultures that Native American adults today are
fighting hard to reclaim and revive.
The KICC has a place for these children, if we can find the help we need with property
purchase. We have a 1 year Native American homesteading program to offer these
children, reconnecting them to their tribal cultures and ways of life, teaching them
responsible, eco-friendly living and self sustainability, with continued support after
graduation. We want the children nobody else has wanted. We want to love them and
teach them how to survive without becoming a criminal or burden to society. We want
to bring them home.
The KICC Foster Care Extension Program teaches these children the basics of
homestead living, from constructing their own earthen tiny home to maintaining the
livestock and conserving the natural resources that support our indigenous cultural
ways of life. We have included academic learning as a portion of our program such as
learning to maintain a balanced bank account, how to drive and maintain a vehicle, get a
driver's license, how to cook, clean, and personal hygiene, etc.
Every life is valuable and has a right to exist. Please help us to help our own tribal
children learn how to exist as responsible and productive young adults, and to teach
them they are not unwanted. We want them. Our Native American tribal cultures can
only be reclaimed and revived if we are able to teach our next generations about our
cultures, languages, ceremonies, and life ways. Without this opportunity our ways and
thus our people, will go extinct.
