Help!
Heavy snowfall crushed our beloved 8-oared rowing boat, and the insurance only covers a fraction of the price of building a new one.
So now we are trying something new - getting your help to fund a new boat!
- All 4th-graders in our municipality are participating in our educational program on rowing and learning about life in the fjord.
- All 6th-graders in our municipality are learning how to row, and learning about the role these boats have played historically in our fjord.
- From May-October our boats are in daily use, by tourists, our local kindergarden, fishing groups and more.
For now we are borrowing boats to follow through on our planned activities - by the end of summer, this new build will be launched, with the help of you guys!
Master boatbuilder Peter Helland-Hansen marks his 30th year as head of the Small Boat Workshop this year. Together with his apprentice Jonathan he will over the next months build a new boat.
The funds will go to the new visitor boat:
- 8 oared clinker built Hardanger boat - a replica of an 1800s rowing boat preserved at the museum.
- The boat has interesting traditional details: hand forged iron rivets, and hewn garboards.
- The boat is an important part of our activities provided for local kids and youth, and offers the oppurtunity to experience the fjord the way people did a hundred years ago.
As a supporter of the project, you are invited to the launch of the finished boat: September 6th at 15.00.
Since this boat will be available for our museums guests in the decades to come, you will be able to row the finished boat when visiting us, and experience yourself what you helped make happen!
