On Sunday evening, July 3, Joe was taken to the ER at Huguley. At the ER, they ran some tests and took x-rays. It turns out he has 2 kidney stones (6mm and 7mm), one blocking each ureter. The doctor said his kidneys were severely infected, and only functioning at 30%. So they admitted him and did emergency surgery the morning of July 4th. They put in 2 stints, one from each kidney down into the bladder, to allow urine to pass and to be able to flush his system. He was kept in the hospital on fluids and antibiotics until Friday,
July 8. He had a follow up appointment with the urologist who did the surgery. Joe needs a second surgery to remove the stones (they weren't able to do this during the first surgery because everything was too infected) and remove the stints (which were simply used as a way to allow urine to pass to the bladder). The Sexton’s do not have health insurance to cover the cost of the surgery which means the surgeon requires them to pay for the surgery upfront. The cost for the 2nd surgery will be around $8000. They also have a couple of ER visits to pay for and Joe has missed work due to his illness. Joe needs this second surgery as soon as possible so he can return to work in good health.
