A helping hand to steady my world
Donation protected
Our brother Donny Simons is in need. He has been living with a horrible disease for a couple of years. Donny had to stop driving and working. He has applied for much assistance, but those wheels of aid are not in place. He has had no income since October.
Don is 44 years old and has Huntington’s Disease. It is a neurological disorder that causes the victim to gradually lose the ability to control one’s movement, mood, and cognitive thinking. There is no cure, nor curbing of this disease. There are some medications that can help with symptoms, but one needs money to fill prescriptions. One also needs money to pay rent, utilities, and any groceries that $190 a month of food stamps doesn’t cover. He has applied for assistance, but he has received none other than SNAP (the food stamps).
Donny was born in Albany and raised in Cohoes. He loves movies and many types of music. He has a loyal group of friends that have been around through thick and thin. Donny worked for Pier I on Wolf Road for 20+ years. Always a hard worker, he continued working for as long as possible until this disease made work impossible. Don was too familiar with knowing how this disease progresses. It is a hereditary disorder that slowly took away our mother, Martha, when she was 50 and our dear sister, Gail, at 42. Obviously, these devastating losses, along with the death of our father, Don, in 1974 and our brother, David, in 1981, have had their toll on all of us. In spite of these obstacles of life and mounting debt from having no income, Donny is trying to remain good spirited. We need for him to have dignity as he moves forward into what we know will be a heartbreaking progression of disease.
We have tried to work with the system of support for NYS and Albany County, but we have not been able to get assistance in place for this man who spent more than half his life as a working, contributing member of society. It is a long haul trying to figure out the systems, paperwork, etc. and heartbreaking seeing Donny’s symptoms worsen. His debt has accumulated and the disease is progressing. There is no relief in sight. Please help us make a difference for Donny right now. We will use any donations to pay off some of his debt and help him with living needs.
Thank you for considering our appeal for donations to help Donny.
