Luke's Long Road to Recovery
Donation protected
How quickly life can change… what started as a normal stomach bug on August 1, 2015 progressed in just a couple days to a life-changing illness. After three spinal taps to rule out many illnesses, the final diagnosis from Mayo is Guillain Barre´ Syndrome; which has left Luke unable to walk or void independently. The five days of intravenous immune globulin treatments during Luke’s two and a half week hospital stay seemed mostly ineffective, so the doctors sent him home on August 25, 2015, in a wheelchair and with a catheter, to let the illness run its course.
Luke and his wife, Aliesha, have five children, ages 7-14, and they live on a modest ranch outside of Dickinson. The family works together running the ranch and their inflatable rental business. Due to the oil regression, Luke’s part-time oil job that provided health insurance for the family was terminated, leaving the family temporarily uninsured at the time of this illness. Being uninsured, self-employed, and unable to work, the medical bills and living expenses are piling up, and the time it takes for GBS to run its course is never known; sometimes extending up to 12 months.
