Hello, I am Evelyn Pena, Logan’s aunt. I started this campaign to help my brother, sister in law, and nephew. Please help Logan Pena and parents in their fight against a rare cancer called Ewings Sarcoma.
Unfortunately Logan’s cancer is rarer than rare in that it is considered Ewings-like. He has tested negative for over 80 sub categories. Dr’s do not know exactly WHAT his cancer is except that it has Ewings characteristics. The problem with that is that Sarcoma’s are very aggressive in nature and without having an exact cancer type, that can affect treatment. Genetic testing will be done which may play role in a treatment plan.
Logan recently had a surgery to remove his tumors. He had 2 on his diaphragm and 1 on his rib cage. The x-ray prior to surgery showed that another tumor was on his diaphragm, so the plan was to take out the top portion of his diaphragm and do a partial chest wall reconstruction. The initial attempt at removing part of the diaphragm via laparoscopic was unable to happen due to what they saw. It appears that Logans chest wall was completely covered in cancer cells. Pathology confirmed LIVE cancer.
The surgery was completed via an 8-10 inch incision on his back to remove the tumors on the diaphragm along with a partial pleural lining removal. The chest wall reconstruction has been rescheduled for 6-8 weeks out. Their Dr is wanting to get started back on treatment asap which would include an aggressive chemotherapy and/or radiation before this next surgery.. and then finishing off treatment with more chemo and radiation.
Joe has health insurance, but he must continue working in order to maintain his job and insurance benefits. Christine is Logan’s sole care-taker during this time and not able to work. Joe will be returning back to work after surgery recovery and will be commuting to wherever treatment will be given.
In the midst of all they are going through, Joe’s job also relocated them back to El Paso so they have been trying to find a house that they can call home. Currently they are without a permanent address and trying to manage care for Logan out of town in Houston at TX Childrens hospital. My brother and his wife (Joe & Christine) have an urgency to find the BEST Dr’s that are able to help with Logans treatment given the rarity of it. They are seeking consultations from all the best Sarcoma specialists in the country in Cleveland, Boston, Seattle, NYC and Houston and treatment will most likely take them out of town.
I am creating this campaign to help with any financial burden they may encounter as that should be the least of their concerns as some treatments, consultations, housing may not be covered.
Please continue to pray with us and if possible help them in their race to find the best treatment plan away from home for Logan’s very RARE cancer.
