Sally Rae’s Heart Journey
Donation protected
Sally Rae is a 2 and a half year old heart warrior. Sally Rae’s heart journey began several months before she was born. While in the womb, Sally Rae was diagnosed with Critical Aortic Stenosis.
Shortly after her diagnosis, doctors in Boston attempted an in utero procedure. This procedure was intended to stretch open her aortic valve, and this opening of the valve could have saved the left side of her heart. During the procedure, Sally Rae’s heart rate slowed so much resuscitation was required. The doctors said they did not think she would make it through the night. Miraculously, she did.
She then had a fetal MRI and a fetal Echocardiogram. The MRI indicated that she had suffered a brain injury, and would never walk, talk, feed herself, or do anything independently. The echocardiogram indicated that both sides of her heart were now leaking. The doctors said, at this point, the pregnancy could be terminated or she would receive comfort care as she passed away, after birth. They said they anticipated she would pass away in the womb. Miraculously, she did not.
After a couple months, Sally Rae’s brain damage and the right side of her heart looked immensely better. The doctors said she would have some form of Cerebral Palsy, but they would try to help her heart after birth.
When Sally Rae was one week old, she had her first open heart surgery, called the Norwood. This is the first of three palliation surgeries required to redirect the pathway of blood through the heart, making the right side of the heart do all the work.
Sally Rae spent over two months in the hospital after this surgery. Her time in the hospital was filled with many ups and downs, complicating her stay. She is now being carefully monitored at home until her next surgery, which will happen around 4 months of age. The amount of dysfunction her heart currently has, could cause a heart transplant soon after the upcoming surgery. Sally Rae is a true Miracle, but her heart journey will last her entire life.
Any money that is raised will be put towards Sally Rae’s medical needs. Currently, she has medical equipment being rented, hospital bills, in-home therapies, necessary medicines, etc.
Giving Sally Rae the best chance at life is the ultimate goal. Taking care of her medical needs is expensive, but it is necessary in order to give many years to enjoy.
We truly appreciate any support!
