Help for Una: Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Journey

In a split second, everything changed for our sister, Una. At 38 years old, she was healthy, active, and always full of life. She loved spending time outdoors, participating in her community, and being there for her family and friends. But a devastating car accident left her with a C5 vertebrae fracture, causing paralysis from the chest down and limited movement in her arms. The impact on her life has been unimaginable.

The New Reality She Faces

Before the accident, Una was fiercely independent, living life to the fullest. Now, she faces challenges that many of us would struggle to comprehend. While she retains some movement in her arms, she has limited dexterity below her elbows at the moment. This means simple tasks we take for granted, like brushing her hair, eating, or holding a cup, are now incredibly difficult for her. The emotional toll of losing her independence is overwhelming.

However, despite these life-altering injuries, Una has remained resilient and determined to regain as much independence as possible. With the right treatment, rehabilitation, and support, there is hope that she may regain not only her upper body strength but the return to use of her lower limbs in the future.

Friends, neighbours, and strangers have reached out to help us during this incredibly difficult time. Their kindness has given us strength, and we are beyond grateful to everyone who has been there for us.

Despite the challenges ahead, we know that with the continued support of our community, there is hope for Una's recovery.

We are asking for your support to help Una access the resources and care she needs for her recovery. Although the health system covers some basic medical needs, the specialized care and rehabilitation she requires go far beyond that. Your donation will help provide her with:

• Home modifications to make her living space wheelchair accessible and safe.

• Intensive rehabilitation programs to help her regain strength and dexterity in her upper body and arms and legs.

• Specialized medical equipment that will improve her quality of life, including wheelchair-accessible tools and assistive devices.

• Participation in clinical trials and cutting-edge treatments. New treatments that use electrical stimulation of the nerves to help her body relearn how to move, which has shown promise in helping some people regain movement after spinal cord injuries.
