Six months ago our friend and classmate, Nick Woltersdorf, broke his neck. While he should have been taking classes for his fall senior semester, preparing for his senior thesis film, and working as a lifeguard, he was instead poked and prodded through eleven surgeries so far. The doctors at Keck have repeatedly extended their estimation for the length of Nick's recovery. He was supposed to be out of the hospital before his twenty-third birthday. Then by Halloween. Then Thanksgiving. Then Christmas. Now, Nick is forced to take another semester off of school for his recovery, delaying his graduation by a full year.
Nick is a senior at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. He pays for school himself. He pays for rent himself. He pays for everything himself. Since he has been in the hospital, Nick has been spending his savings paying rent on an apartment he could not live in. He has been paying California state taxes for the past four years, and was unable to get on disability solely because he has an out-of-state driver's license, and he is unable to get a new ID at the DMV... because he's bedridden in the hospital.
Nick is the most talented person that we've ever met. His dream is to direct movies, and he's really damn good at it too. Ask any of his friends, collaborators, professors, or superiors -- Nick has talent and he is going to lead voices of the next generation of filmmakers. The simple fact that Nick has been stuck in a hospital for months on end instead of pursuing his passion is a travesty.
We didn't start this GoFundMe out of sympathy, though God knows Nick deserves some. We did it because we genuinely believe that Nick deserves a fair shot at coming back to school and healing without the weight of a financial burden. Without a cushion, Nick would be forced to get a job immediately upon being released from the hospital. Nick deserves a break, he deserves to continue living his life without the worry of fiscal debts and payments. He needs time to rest and spend time with friends and family and everyone who loves him.
Help Nick "Dorf" Woltersdorf catch a God-damn break.
