Kitten vs. Coyote

*****UPDATE 5/23/14
Piper had to undergo additional surgery yesterday afternoon. Due to the major tissue damage from the attack, there is a problem with having enough skin to stitch her wound closed. She was able to pull one drainage tube and several stitches out last weekend but the vet felt it best to leave it alone and allow that area to remain open. However, by Wednesday, the remaining stitches came out which left her wound open again. We are hoping that the surgery performed yesterday will help the stitches hold this time and we are hoping to bring her home today. My Piper has been a real trooper! She has the greatest disposition which makes her a pretty easy patient to work with! I am anxious for the day when she will be able to walk around and play again!
UPDATE*********
Piper came through her surgery yesterday afternoon!! The nurse said, in her 29 years of assisting in surgeries, this was the worst trauma surgery she had ever seen. It took multiple boxes of sutures and several hours for the doctor to clean and stitch Piper's wound but it is done. She may get to come home this afternoon but they want to watch her breathing throughout the day to make sure she is okay. I will certainly keep you posted. We are all ready for Piper to be back home!
Our Original story***********
Piper showed up at our house almost a year ago. She chose to live here and she has brought so much fun to our home. She is a constant bit of entertainment and she rules the roost.
You see, I have always been a dog person. My love of cats didn't happen until about 2 years ago so it wasn't very long before I really wanted a kitten to raise of my own. When Piper showed up, she took over our home. She stole the hearts of humans and our dogs alike!
She has been in the hospital since about midnight on Sunday. She was mauled by a coyote and needs to have surgery to close her severe abdominal wounds. However, she suffered internal trauma to her lungs and her breathing has been a real problem. As soon as that issue has stabilized, she will have her surgery.
Needless to say, the vet bills are mounting higher each day. Her prognosis is good but it takes time for the pulmonary trauma to heal, thus the extended hospitalization. We can't bring her home until her lungs heal due to the abdominal wound.
It is a miracle that she was able to escape this brutal attack and a miracle that she was able to crawl home. We have to believe that she is determined to live and she still has strength in reserve! The recovery will be long but she will, once again, bring great joy to our home, I am sure.
Any funds raised exceeding our goal will be donated to a local rescue group.
