ATL: Stand with Joseth, Jailed BLM Activist!
========== TL;DR ============
Joseth was arrested for being on the streets in the 2020 BLM protests in Atlanta, GA. He protested racial injustice along with thousands of people, but Clayton County used the terms of his probation as an excuse to lock him up. Without legal support besides a public defender who demonstrated that she did not care to put much effort into his case, Joseth was quickly and quietly sentenced to a year in County jail -- losing his job, being separated from his fiancé Gaby, unable to help her pay for the house they were just settling into together, and losing all the progress he had made to move in the direction he was going. More than anything right now, Joseth wants support for Gaby.
======== BACKGROUND ========
The Black Lives Matter movement of 2020 was an exciting historical moment. Some say it was the largest movement in U.S. history. But since the media has died down, activists who led and participated in this movement have been facing harsh political repression -- especially, of course, activists of color.
Like many of you, Joseth was in the streets last summer, protesting racial injustice. Like you, maybe, he was arrested with several other people at once with one of those "just stop protesting" charges. But after all those other arrestees were released from Fulton County Jail on bond, Joseth was held for a month and a half. He'd been observing the terms of his probation, paying his fees, and working full time employment on a good job. He was "doing all the right things". But simply by being arrested, Clayton County said he was "breaking the terms of his probation". After finally being released from Fulton County Jail, in September Joseth was pulled over on a routine traffic stop in Cobb County while hurrying to pick up Gaby from work. The officer saw a warrant out for his arrest in Clayton County for "probation violation", and Joseth has been locked up since then.
==== DON'T LET BLACK LIVES TAKE THE HIT ====
With Joseth taken away from her, Gaby is left sad, strained and stressed, holding down multiple jobs to barely scrape by. This is where mutual aid is CRUCIAL. We have to show up for each other when the opposition shuts our friends down.
Support a couple that fought against racial injustice just like thousands of other who did the same -- except most of us didn't suffer the heavy retaliation that leaves them unable to meet material needs. Let's cover just 2 months rent for them and give space for Gaby to breathe and figure out the next steps.
