Help Madison Police Horse "Cooper"

On Monday July 19th, 2021, Cooper - a 9 year old Percheron and 5 year veteran member of Madison Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit, was rushed to University of Wisconsin Veterinary Hospital for colic symptoms. Once there, emergency veterinarians confirmed Cooper had a displaced colon requiring emergency surgery.

Since surgery, Cooper has suffered several complications requiring an extended stay at the UW Vet Hospital. He is considered to be in critical condition and requires veterinary staff to monitor him 24 hours a day. Recently, Cooper suffered a colic relapse with stomach reflux and inability to eat which was a monumental set back. He has shown signs of progress, but will require many more days in the hospital to recover.

A horse of his size requires almost double the care than a non-draft horse and his vet bills continue to go up each day he is a patient at the hospital.
