Assistance for My Father
Donation protected
I got married in May and had my father all in one piece. In August my father (Bill) got a cut on his foot. In what seemed like overnight he got gangrene and he needed an amputation. We thought it was just going to be a removal of his foot, but they ended up taking almost half of his leg. The infection was quickly spreading and sepsis was setting in. It was either he loses his leg or he loses his life. During the recovery process we found he has diabetes, Vascular Disease, and Peripheral Artery Disease. Everything seemed to be going as well as it can for someone who had half of their leg amputated, and then it started in his other foot. He got a bone infection in one of his toes on his right foot. They put him on antibiotics, but it just delayed the inevitable, that toe was removed too. While he was on antibiotics they found a spot on his big toe. We aren't entirely sure how, but he got gangrene in that toe and it was removed as well. So, in 4 months my father lost half of his left leg and 2 toes on his right foot. His podiatrist and vascular doctors believe it is only a matter of time before they have to take the other toes. The arties in his foot near his toes are completely blocked and there is no blood flow at all. Any cut or abrasion can cause an infection and turn into gangrene which then leads to an amputation. My father has applied for Social Security and Disability, but he is continuously getting denied and having to appeal. I guess only having 1.5 legs isn't enough for medical assistance. He is on their version of Medicaid, but it is a shared cost. So they still pay a lot out of pocket. My step mother is doing everything that she can to help keep them afloat, but it isn't working how they had planned. They are really struggling and there is no improvement in sight. I spent some time down there in August for the first amputation and they have been fighting with social security and disability since then. They need help. Going from a 2 income household to one, and having someone who needs assistance sometimes, is really hard on them not just financially, but emotionally and mentally. Getting assistance from Family and Friends can only help them improve completely.
