The Congregational Church of Plainville, UCC’s historic building and steeple, predating the town of Plainville itself, has defined Plainville’s ascending spirit, story, and skyline, existing as one of Plainville’s most architecturally significant and lovely structures. The beautiful, historic building welcomes those driving from the west to Plainville. The steeple’s clock provided the time to the people of Plainville for years. The steeple’s carillon bells sang hymns to our neighbors for decades.
However, today, the church clock is still and the carillon bells silent, both needing repair. With that, the continuity of the services that the building provides is threatened.
The church structure, designed by prominent 19th century architect Henry Austin, was constructed in 1850 as the Second Congregational Church of Farmington. It has been an important focal point for local, and occasionally national history including a speaking engagement from Susan B. Anthony in 1874 and the marriage of Major John Coolidge, son of President Calvin Coolidge, to Florence Trumbull in 1929. Next year the House of Worship will turn 175 years old.
When the clock stopped running, a thorough investigation was completed by engineers and architects that specialize in historic preservation. Several issues were uncovered. A multi-phase plan was developed to preserve the steeple. The first phase of that plan, emergency repairs, has already been started. It is estimated that to complete all repairs, the cost will be over a half million dollars.
To make the preservation of the steeple possible, the Church is utilizing two approaches. The first approach is grant applications. The second approach is an ambitious year-long capital campaign to raise $300,000.
