As some of you know, Brandy and Spencer welcomed their son into the world, Roman Pierce Back, on April 6, 2022. Roman arrived 13 weeks early and was 1lb and 4.5 oz. Roman was born a warrior and came out breathing on his own and needed a platelet transfusion which are often used to prevent bleeding among preterm infants.

A couple weeks leading up to his birth, the doctor's discovered there was a reverse flow in his umbilical cord and a placenta deficiency. Brandy's liver was also battling with HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count), which is a serious and rare disease which causes high blood pressure during pregnancy. Fortunately, a week prior to Brandy's emergency C-Section, she was receiving steroid injections to help accelerate his lung and brain development and a magnesium drip to slow or stop preterm labor, and to prevent injuries to Roman's brain.

Brandy is recovering from her C-Section, she is able to produce milk for Roman, her liver enzymes are increasing, and she still needs to watch her blood pressure. Roman is getting stronger by the second and thriving. Eight days after he was born, his brain scan came back clear, his platelet count went up on their own as well as his white blood cell count. Roman is able to take his milk and hold it down at this point also.

The upcoming months will be a journey for the entire family. Roman will remain in the NICU at UVA in Charlottesville. They are incredibly grateful for the Doctors and Nurses at UVA, as they have provided the best care possible while providing great bedside manner, comfort and peace of mind all while being hands-on and making this experience as positive as possible for the new parents. Jimmy Lansberry and I, (Amanda Najdyszak), set this up so we could help raise funds for medical expenses, gas expenses, hotel expenses, food expenses, and monthly bills while Brandy and Spencer are taking a break from work while they navigate through this journey.
