Support Serena

Serena recently planned to start a new job on Monday, August 7th after quitting her old one back in May. Because of the employment gap, she does not currently have medical insurance. On Tuesday, August 1st she was going about her normal chores at home - cleaning the house, folding laundry and breaking down boxes by her truck to bring to recycling.

She stomped hard on a particularly uncooperative box when her femur popped out of its socket, then was fractured along with her pelvis when she fell. Living rurally and being the only one home, it took her 45 minutes to crawl from her driveway to the door, dragging her injured leg every painful inch.

It took 3 hours since her fall to arrive at the Emergency Room, where the extent of her injuries was identified. She had to stay in the hospital for three days, where she had to undergo a rod placement in her femur with pins to secure it to her hip. This was not only a traumatically painful experience, but it is also burdened by insurmountable medical debt.

Serena is my mother. Myself and the rest of my family are doing everything we can to support her recovery and ensure she feels safe and loved. She is an incredibly resilient woman, one that I've watched growing up battle poverty, single motherhood and mental health. She is a trusted community member, a Military Veteran of Operation Desert Storm and a mother of three triplet daughters. She rarely admits or asks for help. She has worked tooth and nail to build a life she loves - and frankly deserves - and instilled in me and my sisters her same sense of drive, passion and independence.

We are doing everything we can to find resources and financial assistance to pay down her surprise medical bills, but in the meantime, we are seeking help from our community to ease the burden.
