Dorothy’s Story

On July 2, 2023, came a dark time for our family. One of our strongest members has lost a crucial battle with cancer. Dorothy Joann Allen was a lifelong supporter behind Saint Judes Children's Research Hospital; a strong-minded warrior who believed in nothing besides giving back to the community and helping the youth. She was a great role model and the foundation behind a great family too. She has fought a long hardened battle against pancreatic cancer, and deserves to be mourned but also celebrated.

3 Years of Suffering

Dorothy’s battle really started during Covid, March of 2020 to be exact. She was endlessly maneuvering through back-to-back doctor appointments, undergoing different surgeries, and in and out of multiple hospitals in hopes to treat and manage the cancer. Not only was this tough on her and her family but she also sporadically lost her vision within three months. Living with diabetes, pancreatic cancer, and being legally blind takes the strength of a champion and is just one thing that makes this lady incredibly powerful. The loss of vision became harder to handle than the cancer at one point. This was only because of the type of person Dorothy was; she was a joyful free spirit that lived life in the moment and cherished all experiences. She traveled the world, enjoyed cruises, tasted diverse cuisines, as well as being open-minded to other people's cultures when she visited. So becoming blind after decades of walking the earth with great vision was an extremely difficult pill to swallow, she even described being blind as; “Living in a room but never turning the lights on!”

The Goal + How It Would be Utilized

Our goal for $7,000 will be used in the following ways:

  • Medical expenses ($1,000)
  • Cremation ($2,300)
  • Memorial Service ($1,500)
  • Reception | Repast Gathering ($1,200)
  • Miscellaneous Expenses ($300)
  • Fees (GoFundMe)

A portion of Dorothy’s medical expenses were covered by her insurance but the rest is on her loved ones to take care of. We would greatly appreciate any amount of support in any form; whether it’s a contribution to this campaign or sharing the campaign's link to other media sites to spread Dorothy’s story.

Last and Final Request
Dorothy lived on these principles; (1) To always care for others no matter if she receives the love back. (2) Never let her current reality influence how she treats others. (3) Do things from the heart and with pure intentions. These are qualities of a great leader, role model, and someone that I look up to. Lastly, this goes into why I’ve reached out for help. I will honor my grandmother's last request; to be celebrated, and leave this earth on a positive note. I wish to send her off to heaven the right way because she will never be forgotten.

On behalf of the family, I’m extremely grateful that you have taken time out of your day to read this story to the end.
