On May 10 of 2020, eleven year old Willow Fraser was airlifted to the IWK Hospital in Halifax after suffering an ischemic stroke, which was described as an autoimmune response to an unknown virus and further diagnosed as medium vessel vasculitis. May 10 was Mother's Day and started out as any family day at home should, but this event has changed this family's lives forever.
Five days after arriving at the IWK, Willow was rushed into emergency surgery for a craniotomy to reduce the life threatening swelling on her brain and stem. She spent eight days in the ICU in a medically induced coma with her mother Nicole and father Aaron by her side. Following 43 days in the IWK hospital in Halifax, Willow was transferred to the Stan Cassidy Center for Rehabilitation (SCCR) on June 22 where she still resides in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
The stroke has affected the left side of Willow's brain and she spends her days in intensive therapy. Willow's hard work and determination has been a true inspiration to everyone she has worked with and she continues to make progress. Willow recently raised over $400 for the Oromocto SPCA during an art sale within the SCCR where her paintings were featured.
Strokes are so rare in children and doctors at the IWK are still in consultation with Sick Kids in Toronto, along with other worldwide experts to develop a treatment plan for Willow. Willow faces another surgery at the IWK in the coming months for a prosthetic bone flap replacement following a Staphylococcus aureus infection and a second craniotomy to remove the infected skull bone flap in July. This was her second air ambulance flight from the Fredericton airport and the family is so grateful to our medical system for taking such good care of Willow.
The support you give will help the family with home modifications for Willow's safe return home, modified recreational equipment to support a healthy lifestyle for Willow, and other items needed for independence and education.
