MUWEKMA OHLONE TRIBE’S EDUCATION AND REVITALIZATION OF OUR NATIVE LANGUAGE; TRADITIONAL DANCES, REGALIA, AND SONGS; IDENTIFICATION, RESTORATION, AND CULTIVATION OF NATIVE PLANTS; FOODS, AND CULTURAL WORKSHOPS

Horše Túuxi (hor-sh-eh troo-hee). Good day, hello in our Native Chochenyo Language. The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area is a landless, previously federally recognized tribe, historically identified by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) as the Verona Band of Alameda County. The enrolled lineages are directly descended from aboriginal tribes surrounding the San Francisco Bay Area whose ancestors were missionized into Missions San Francisco, Santa Clara, and San Jose; and had resided on several rancherias from the 19th through the early mid-20th century. As a landless tribe whose families enrolled with the BIA from 1928-1971, and went to Indian boarding schools in the 1930s-40s, our landless tribe was scattered throughout the Bay Area with no places other than homes to meet and revitalize our traditions, language, and dances which were exported from the Mission San Jose/Niles/Sunol/Pleasanton rancherias to the interior Yokut, Miwok, Maidu, and Coast Miwok-speaking communities during the1870s and later years. Our tribe has been in the process of revitalizing our language, songs, traditions, dances, regalia, and native plant restoration, identification, food, and cultivation for cultural and educational workshops for our children, tribal members, and the general public.

You can help by contributing to the Tribe’s GoFundMe program.
