Miss Unity Pageant-Ijeoma Okoro

Hello my name is Ijeoma Okoro.

I am a freshman at the University of Maryland College Park studying public health on the premedical track. This year, I am competing in the Miss Unity Pageant and I need to raise $600 in order to advance. These funds would go to the winner of the pageant.

 

i’m currently working towards becoming a physician. I hope to impact medicine by increasing the number of minority women in emergency medicine as well as eliminating health disparities for minorities and biases in healthcare.

My reasoning for going into medicine are based on personal experiences. My mother became paralyzed when giving birth to my sister due to malpractice. It wasn’t until I got older that I understood minorities were treated poorly not only in healthcare but many fields in our country. I hope to become a trustable and empathetic physician that patients feel comfortable going to knowing they will be treated adequately. 

 

If picked as Miss Unity, I hope to establish a platform to continue speaking on these issues in healthcare as well as minority mental health.

 

This past summer I interned at the NIH where I did research on implicit bias among medical students in the Washington DC area and I hope to continue research in this area including health disparities among minorities throughout my undergrad career.

I currently serve on the commission on juvenile justice for Montgomery county. I am also the representative for my scholars program at UMD.
