Emergency Relief Funds for Impacted Citizens of the La Soufriere Volcano Eruption in St. Vincent and the Grenadines
On Friday April 9, 2021 the La Soufriere volcano located on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines which is located West of Barbados, South of St. Lucia and North of Grenada has erupted. The volcano continues to erupt, leaving a trail of devastation and displaced citizens. The last time this volcano erupted was April 13, 1979.
Due to the threat of loss of life, St. Vincent which is made up of 110,000 people, about 19,000 of them faced evacuations from the Red Zones (north of the island) to shelters in the Green Zones (further south of the island). Some citizens in the Green Zones have opened up their homes to friends, family, and strangers during this horrific natural disaster which also have put a strain on their own resources such as water and food supply. The amount of damage taken place island-wide has disrupted the water flow systems, the quality of air from the volcanic ash, and the access to food. The rebuilding and recovery process may take years.
Help SVG is made up of a group of Americans, Vincentians, and other Caribbean nationals based in Broward and Palm Beach County, Florida with hopes to raise emergency relief funds to assist our fellow brothers and sisters in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The emergency relief funds will assist with items needed such as clothes, bottled water, food, medical supplies, rebuilding material, and cleaning materials.
The outcry for help made by Vincentians via social media has grabbed the attention of international media further highlighting the immediate need for assistance. Help SVG is in direct contact with many who are directly affected and feedback along with transparency is paramount in this matter.
Help SVG is appealing to all in assisting us with helping those in immediate need in shelters as well as those housing others.
