Hello! My name is Amy Richards. I am Lauren Slater's sister, and I am setting up this campaign for her. Lauren is currently at Parkview Regional Medical Center (PRMC) in ICU in critical condition and has been there
since March 13th. Lauren is the mother of 3 amazing children, Ava (12), Samuel (2), and Luke (10 months) and loving wife for her wonderful husband, Sam Slater. Lauren currently is a teacher at Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne and an active/passionate parishioner at St. Jude Catholic Church. Lauren is couragously fighting to make progress in ICU so she can be at home with her family.
Lauren was recently fighting flu-like symptoms and what was thought to be a common cold. After a brief visit to the doctor's office, she started feeling worse as of Sunday morning and Sam decided it was time to take Lauren into Parkview (located on Randalia) to see what was going on. Parkview ran some tests and chest X-rays to find they needed to transport her immediately to PRMC. Lauren was transported around 8PM to PRMC via ambulance and was admitted to ICU. They ran additional chest x-rays, blood work, and a whole slue of tests to determine a prognosis but have had no luck as of yet. Lauren was quickly hooked up to an oxygen mask as her levels were abnormally low (71%).
From there, they felt it was necessary to put her on Oxygen Therapy (as we know "ventilator") to maximize her oxygen intake and get some rest. In order to do this, Lauren has to be sedated so that she doesn't get over stimulated or agitated with the equipment that she is currently connected to. This will allow optimal relaxation in hopes for a quicker healing process. Currently, results are coming back negative and the doctors are baffled as to what the underlying cause is for Lauren's condition. We are hopeful they are doing everything they can for her and that we will have answers soon. She is making progress, but it is very slow. We are looking at several weeks still in the ICU and then rehab. Without having any definitive answers yet, we remain hopeful that Lauren can continue to make progress in the right direction.
Given the nature of being in the ICU for possibly several more weeks, being on oxygen therapy, and rehab, comes the outrageous medical bills ahead. Although money is at the bottom of our priorties in this situation, I am certain it still lingers in the back of Sam's mind. Our close knit community, group of friends, and family is amazing, and I am confident we can all raise some money for Lauren's medical expenses, continued daycare for the children, food, diapers, etc. while Lauren is in the ICU and Sam is continually by her side.
I will continue to provide updates as they become available. Our main priority is to do whatever it takes to get Lauren home safe and sound so that she can be with her kids, husband, and family no matter how much it costs. Lauren's husband and our family are beyond grateful for your generosity, phone calls, texts, e-mails, and, most importantly, prayers during this time. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts and please continue to keep Lauren and her family in your thoughts and prayers. GOD BLESS!
