Hi fam!
Whether we talked just this morning or last saw each other a few years ago, I would like to share this news with you: I have been given the remarkable opportunity to go to School of the Nations (S.O.N.), an elementary through high school, in Nairobi, Kenya for a year (2014-2015) as an art teacher. I went to S.O.N. last year with a team of 8 friends from Livingwater Church, Berkeley and we had an incredible time working (by working I mean running around, laughing, singing dancing, making arts and crafts, and having meaningful conversations) with children at two schools and a children's home, as well as listening to the stories of the many kinds of people we met during our two weeks there. It was a vision trip where we were primarily learning to listen, understand, and grow a heart for the people.
Now, 11 months later, I am preparing to return again to Kenya to join the children at S.O.N., and share my love for art and how art can explore and communicate the most important things in our everyday lives. I will also be teaching a new (pilot) psychology class for S.O.N.'s new high school (and thus making use of both of my degrees! YES)
But I can't do this alone, and I don't think I was meant to. I need the support and the help of the wonderful people around me, whether that be through prayers, thoughts, words, hugs, or finances. As far as finances go, the $5000 will cover my airfare to and from Kenya (that's already $2000), weekends, meals outside of school, and other basic living expenses for the year (my housing is already taken care of).
Thank you for partnering with me in serving the people of Kenya. As God opens the doors to this new journey in my life, I am immensely thankful for your support and presence in my life!
Na Updendo (with love),
Melanie
