Kayla, "Kaii Kaii," Baker age 25, peacefully passed away on January 20th, 2019 just before midnight at University Hospital of London, Ontario. Kayla was born on February 10th,1993 to Sean and Kristina Baker, and ever since birth she was known for her wandering/wondering soul.
Words cannot fully describe the entirety of who Kayla was, and the journey she lived; many years of which were painful. For some, she was known as Kaii Kaii, a name she chose for her life on the streets—a life that consumed and tormented her to point of using drugs to find the freedom she desperately sought. For 10 years, Kaii Kaii experimented with almost everything—marijuana, crystal meth, oxy’s, heroin, and finally found that fentanyl provided the relief she needed to face the demons she was battling with. Her addiction created a mask so others couldn’t get to know the real Kayla.
But Kayla was a woman who will always be remembered for her celebrated laugh, fierce striking eyes that changed colour depending on her mood, and tenacious care-free spirit. Kayla loved being the center of attention, whether in her dance moves, singing, or her artistic nature. Despite many attempts, she never could understand the humor of sarcasm, and for her family that... would be one of her greatest downfalls.
Kayla was a person who would stand up for what is right, and use her experiences to help others. She wants to use her story and her voice to help end the stigma and judgments associated with addiction. Before she passed away, she participated in a documentary called, "Needles in the Hay" https://www.facebook.com/NITHDOC/ produced by Brett Myers. It is here, that she reminds others that addiction is not a choice or a weakness, but it is a powerful and controlling disease. In furthering her voice, she asked for memorial donations to be made to the documentary’s funding to reach as many people as possible.
A special thanks to Dr. Koivu, and the nursing staff at the University Hospital for their support, compassion, and dedication in Kayla’s care the last few months. You were all guiding lights in some of the darkest times, and we express our gratitude.
Kayla is survived by her parents, Sean and Kristina Baker; her sister Josie Nelson; her brother-in-law Leigh Nelson; her brother Adam Baker; and numerous other family and friends. Kayla was loved deeply by many, and will be loved “times infinity and beyond”.
All donations will be put towards the completion of Needles in the Hay as requested by Kaii Kaii.
