What do you do when the answer to your most painful question is “I don’t know”? My older brother Aaron and his wife Jennifer have been learning that in the face of the unknown you press for answers and live each day in hope.
On July 20, Aaron went to the hospital for severe abdominal pain. We believed that he would be stabilized, receive a diagnosis and leave quickly with a treatment plan, but after about ten days, we began to realize that that might not be the case. In fact, it seemed that even after multiple tests the answer to his questions remained “I don’t know.” While the doctors identified symptoms that were causing pain, they have not been able to identify the underlying reason for the symptoms.
In the end, Aaron spent 25 days in the hospital. We are so grateful that he was stabilized enough to return home. And, yes, the doctors provided some limited information with which he can face each day of recovery and think about returning to work. But Aaron and Jennifer will continue to press for answers and will move forward in the hope that a specialist somewhere will be able to explain what happened during July and August.
So, what do we do in the face of the unknown?
We express our deep love for Aaron and Jennifer. We know that the bills will continue to arrive in their mailbox to cover the costs of the hospital stay, multiple tests, doctor consultations and ambulance transportation. We help them move forward with their quest for answers and support them in the small ways we can.
