Support Abbey: A Loving Mom Fighting for Her Life

Donation protected
January 27, 2025 was supposed to be the greatest wedding anniversary of Abbey and Kyle Small's life.

The Smalls have been married for five years and this year was special - they were expecting the birth of their second child. The Army National Guard granted Kyle leave from his overseas deployment to be home with Abbey and their two-year-old as their new addition, a second daughter, joined the family.

During childbirth, Abbey experienced a rare and life-threatening medical emergency, requiring her to be flown to a larger hospital for advanced care. She is currently in critical condition, under sedation, and is fighting for her life.

You may not know the Smalls personally, but you have probably experienced their selfless acts of service. Not only is Kyle a member of the National Guard, he is also a Police Officer with the Galesburg Police Department. Abbey is an emergency dispatcher for Galesburg/Knox County 911. The Smalls have dedicated themselves to providing strangers, neighbors, and friends with comfort and assistance in the worst moments of their lives.

Maybe the only thing Abbey loves more than helping others, is being a mom. Abbey was made to be a mother. She now has two daughters, a two-year-old and a newborn, who will grow up knowing firsthand what strength looks like as they watch their mother fight to stay alive and live her dream of raising them.

The reality is we don't know exactly what is in store for the future. We know medical costs will be high and we know there will be extensive recovery time. We're asking today for your help in supporting Abbey, Kyle, and their daughters through this enormously hard moment in time.

The Smalls moved to our community and put down roots, dedicating themselves to serving their new neighbors. They do not have local family to lean on. Abbey's mom has taken time off work to help and traveled to town to help. It is a big ask; but if not the Smalls' community and friends, who else?

If Abbey's calm voice has ever reassured you through a storm, if her contagiously sweet smile, or willingness to help out have ever touched you, please consider taking this moment to show that love back.

Thank you for reading Abbey's story. We appreciate any help or contribution, no matter how big or small! Please share our campaign link on social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and with your friends. 5 dollars from a stranger or 10 bucks from one of your co-workers makes a difference. We will keep you posted on the use of funds and Abbey's progress going forward. Every dollar counts.

And finally, in whatever version of spirituality you practice, please hold Abbey and her family in your hearts. Keep the healing love flowing so that Abbey can return to caring for her family and community.
