After Vietnam: Dad Made Some Art

“My art is not a lecture, I just want people to think.” – Galen Brown, 1945-2013.

Over his 40-year span as an artist, Galen Brown’s work centered around that theme. His images delve into the shapes and shadows of what he observed. Whether it was the shapes related to war and peace, the shapes of justice and injustice, shapes behind other artist’s works, shapes in landscapes, and even the shapes related to his own cancer, he challenges the viewer to think.   His pieces remain relevant to the ongoing issues of today.

Galen, a Viet Nam U.S. Marine veteran and recipient of a Purple Heart served two tours of duty as a sniper. His journey as an artist began after returning from war.

Selected pieces from many of his series of work have been collected in Galen Brown’s Retrospective, "Shapes and Shadows: Works on Paper."  To view the pieces, visit the Galen A. Brown Art Collection website .  The website also provides opportunity to purchase pieces.

So far, two retrospective shows have been scheduled for 2018.  The first is at the John Day Gallery at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD beginning March 5 through April 4, 2018.  The second is at the Northfield Arts Guild Gallery in Northfield, MN, September 28 through October 27, 2018.  We are pursuing other venues for exhibitions.

We need to raise funds to have the artworks framed. We estimate that each of the 30 pieces will cost between $100-$400 to frame. We will also use the funds to document his many other works and to tell his story.  Your contribution to this campaign is key to making the show happen. All donors will receive an invitation to art show openings and updates on the progress of this project. Donors receive original and reproduced art, based on contribution level.

Thank you for helping us bring Galen's work out to the world to be seen.  And hopefully some of it will make people think.
