Aid Flood Victims in Sierra Leone

Donation protected
The Unforgotten is asking for your help to provide emergency assistance to the women and children in Kingtom and Kissy. Our beneficiaries have lost all of their possessions and need your help to rebuild their lives. We hope to raise $10,000 to provide basic needs to 300 women and children. The Unforgotten is a 501(c)3 organization, therefore, your donation is tax-deductible. We are a 0% overhead charity which, ensures 100% of your donation goes toward our beneficiaries affected by the devastating flood.

On 14 August, 2017 unprecedented rainfall in Freetown, Sierra Leone brought about a devastating landslide burying everything in its path. Hundreds of people are reported dead and many more are still missing.

As you can imagine the domino effect, most of Freetown is flooded. Over 3,000 people were affected by the flood water.

Our Kissy and Kingtom Bridge schools were damaged. Also, most of the women and children in our programs were affected by the flood.  Their homes were completely inundated with flood water and their possessions saturated with mud. Thankfully none of the women and children in the communities lost their lives.

Your donation will go towards providing food, safe drinking water, clothing, materials to secure their homes, hygiene kits, and water and hygiene sanitation (WASH) training to prevent waterbourne illnesses.

Flood water in Kissy Dockyard community

Isatu, our beneficiary in the Aid Trash Dump program, gives her account on how the flood affected her family on 14 Aug 2017 in Kissy.

Abbibatu, our beneficiary in the Wi Yone Moni project gives her account on the flood in Kissy. The exterior wall to her home is completely damaged.

Most of our staff were affected by the flood. They were awakened to water rushing into their homes in the middle of the night. There was no time to protect their valuables.  Yet, they are on the front lines, assessing the damage and providing aid.

Isatu, our beneficiary in the Aid Trash Dump Children program and  her mother Fatmata who is a beneficiary of the Wi Yone Moni project home was complete damaged by the flood water.

Kadiatu, our beneficiary in the Aid Trash Dump Children program and her grandmother Zainab who is a beneficiary of the Wi Yone Moni project are homeless due to the flood.

The recovery and rebuilding effort will take some time. Our mothers and children are very vulnerable to many dangers such as disease, lack of adequate shelter, food insecurity, clothes, clean drinking water, and other basics needs. August and September is the height of the rainy season, and we expect more storms to come within the coming weeks.

We will do everything possible to protect our girls and mothers, and help them rebuild their lives. We need you help!

The Unforgotten has been endeavoring for social economic development for single women and the education of their daughters in the dumpsite communities of Kissy Dockyard (Kissy Bomeh) and Kolleh Town (Kingtom Bomeh) in the capital city of Freetown, Sierra Leone since 2013.

Donations to the Unforgotten are tax deductible. We are classified by the IRS as a tax exempt public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tax ID#87-0803021

Why did I start this campaign?

My name is Aminata Alharazim. I am the Sierra Leone Country Director for the Unforgotten Fund in Sierra Leone. We are a zero overhead charity. Meaning, I do not collect a salary or any compensation for the work that I do on behalf of the charity. I am a volunteer, and I do this work because I truly believe that education and development of women and children will bring about improved quality of life, increase life expectancy, empowerment and liberation from generational poverty.

I was born and raised in the United States, and both of my parents are from Sierra Leone. For years my family would vacation to Sierra Leone to spend time with family and friends. Overtime, my sister and I became aware of the disparity of wealth and the vulnerability of women and children. To make a difference in a girl’s life, my sister and I started the Unforgotten Fund Sierra Leone to provide education and women’s empowerment programs to women and children who live and work in the dumpsites/landfills in Kissy - Kissy Dockyard and Kingtom - Kolleh Town, Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The Unforgotten Fund Sierra Leone has a big field presence in these communities. We have field staffs that have been working with the women and girls in our program since 2013. We work very closely with the community leaders and stakeholders in these communities. Many of our beneficiaries in our Aid Trash Dump Children and Wi Yone Moni programs were affected by the 14 August 2017 flood. We are responding to the relief effort to rebuild their lives.

We are performing needs assessments to accurately determine the needs for each beneficiary in our program. The funds collected from this campaign will be used to provide emergency assistance, aid, and relief to the women and girls affected by our floods in our Aid Trash Dump Children and Wi Yone Moni programs. The funds will be deposited into the charity bank account in the US, and we will purchase items or services that are needed for distribution to the beneficiaries. We have field staff on the ground that performs the operations for the organization. We are audited every year to ensure that funds are used appropriately and programs are running as planned.
