OPIAJ is an organization of the Apurinã and jámamadi indigenous peoples. It was created on November 5, 2004 to defend and promote the dignified social rights for all Pauini indigenous people, since there were no indigenous organizations in the municipality and the indigenous peoples were referenced to the indigenous movement in the state of Acre.
Our main role is to represent the Apurinã and Jamamadi indigenous peoples politically, so our daily activities are to monitor and articulate the access of these peoples to social rights, cultural appreciation and internal strengthening of the villages.
OPIAJ's area of activity is the municipality of Pauini in the state of Amazonas, being politically responsible for 7 demarcated indigenous lands, three in the process of claiming for demarcation where 37 villages are located, totaling approximately 3,200 indigenous people, a number that will be confirmed from the consolidation of the socioeconomic survey carried out by OPIAJ in 2019.
The demarcated T.Is are:
Água Preta / Inari, Catipari / Mamoriá, Peneri / Tacaquiri, Seruini / Marienê, Guajahaã, Inauini / Teuini and Camadeni. In the process of claiming for demarcation are Kapyra / Kanakury, Baixo Seruini and Santa Vitória.
OPIAJ represents 38 villages: Tocimão, São Raimundo, São Benedito, Xamakery, Jagunço II, Boa União, Vera Cruz, Maripuá, Kasiriã, Kasiri, São José do Tacaquiri, Cachoeira, Nova Floresta, Nova Vista, Santo Antonio do Catipari, São Jerônino, Ka kori, Kakori I, Kamarapu, Mipiri, Atukatxi, Kasiriki, Mariepary, Yopiã, Castanheira, Nova Esperança, São Francisco, Kamarapa, Penedo, Marienê, Bom Jesus, Maloka, New Life, Guajahaã, Sakoã, Santa Vitória, Aldeia Nova, Kairiko and Karuá.
We, the Pupỹkary people, or Apurinã, originate from the Purus River, where our “old trunk”, our kindred, comes from.
Today we are almost 10,000 people spread along the Purus, Sepatini, Paciá, Ituxi, Iaco and Aquiri rivers, in the states of Amazonas, Acre and Rondônia. We speak a unique language of the Maipure Aruak trunk and keep ancient customs alive, such as taking awiry, chewing katsupary and making keenery in remembrance of our ancestors. Our kinship system in two halves - Xiwapurinery and Mẽẽtymanety, guides our social, cosmological and environmental relationships.
