At the Stroke of Ten....

Life changes in a split second, you wish you could go back....

I knew as soon as I walked into his hospital room the man lying in the bed was not the same vibrate man I knew just five days earlier. He couldn’t talk, smile, nor move his right side. His eyes were pleading with me. My insides grew warm, and I felt my head spinning. His nurse ran to my side and told me to sit down. My husband had a stroke while in recovery from his quintuple bypass surgery. He was hooked up to machines and the tears were running down his cheeks. I had to be strong from that point on. The love of my life needed me.

My husband, Don has always been my rock. The strong one, he has taken care of me since a car accident in 2009 left me in constant pain on a daily basis. He is my best friend. My soulmate. Don is the one who makes me laugh when I’m crying, takes me to the ocean when I need calm and peace, patiently does yoga with me which is quite the sight, and watched ‘housewives’ with me to point of learning names. A dedicated husband he is.

My husband is the most genuine and generous person I know. I watched him with such admiration as he had the nurses in stitches doing his magic before surgery. I have always been the shy one, he the more outgoing one. His light is still there just dimmed temporarily. It’s been incredibly hard. He has made progress. He doesn’t smile like he used to. His speech is not the same but that is fine by me. He has a long way to go to walk and have use of right hand.

Unfortunately, he was fired from his job when they found out he had the stroke. We no longer have insurance. Therapy has stopped for now until we get a decision on his disability. It is not automatic for heart attack and stroke victims. A sad but true circumstance.

I want that that smile back on my husband that you see in the photo. He is so handsome.
