As many of you all know my mom, Barbie, has been diagnosed with breast cancer for the third time.
First round was 9 years ago. She underwent a lumpectomy and vigorous rounds of chemo and radiation.
Second time was 4 years ago when the breast cancer came back in her jaw bone. After very intensive radiation to her face, she lost 2 teeth but they seem to have got all of it. Thankfully with my Aunt Susie's help and my moms willingness to make changes in life as far as supplements and healthy eating she has been able to keep it at bay.
Fast forward to a few months ago the cancer is back in the same piece of jaw bone. Instead of doing more radiation her team of doctors have decided the best thing to do is to remove that piece of jaw bone all together.
August 13, 2018 she will undergo a very invasive surgery to remove this piece of bone. They will be taking a piece of of her fibula from her leg to replace the piece they take from her jaw. This will include a 10 hour surgery, 3 days of induced coma and a 10 day hospital stay. Not to mention the 6+ weeks she will be out of work to heal. After she is woken up she will also undergo speech therapy to teach her how to use her mouth again. Hopefully this will take care of it and she will not have to undergo radiation again as well.
Unfortunately she does not qualify for short term disability as it is a pre-existing medical condition. Out of pocket we are looking at around 15k between medical expenses, her being out of work as well as Cookie being out of work.
I have spent many weeks pondering on whether or not I should set up a go fund me account because to be quite honest we are not the type of family to ask for help. Mom and Cookie are the type that give in times of need, without question, without recognition, during times they aren’t financially ahead themselves and without looking for anything in return.
Stress is so bad for the body and the last thing I want is for my mom to stress over how they are going to make it through this not only in health, but financially as well.
As much as I want to help I am still trying to figure out how to dig myself out of a hole from all of my medical expenses the past year. It saddens me that all the time off I have had to take off this year I will not be able to be there for her throughout her stay in the hospital.
I ask that if you can afford to give $5, $10, or $15 please do. And if you can’t then I ask you to please say a little prayer every morning for her because with God all things are possible ❤️
