We're BIG SKY HOUNDS and we have Big Dreams in Big Sky Country!
Check out the latest article about us in The Chronicle of the Horse and see what we're all about!
We started our mounted foxhunting club three years ago with two hounds, Zeus and ZB. Now, we have a whole magnificent pack of older hounds that a bunch of us crazy Montana horseback riding enthusiasts use as an excuse to ride all year round! Plus, we have visitors from all over the world who are excited to come ride with us in our unique version of an age-old sport -- the Wild West kind.
Big Sky Hounds - Foxhunting Montana-Style.

Unlike many foxhunting clubs, we chase coyotes and we ride like cowboys. Our coyotes are as much a part of our family as our hounds. We all enjoy a fun game of chase (we don't hunt to kill) every Wednesday and Sunday, September though April, from our ranch headquarters near the headwaters of the Missouri River near Three Forks, Montana. Most of us ride western. We enjoy our ranch trained horses as much as our english hunter jumpers.
This year, we were accepted for registration with the Masters of Foxhounds Association . We will become the only registered fox hunt in Montana!
Because we are still new to the sport and learning, we prefer to use older broke hounds to teach us about foxhunting. Other hunt clubs draft hounds to us when they reach an age where they can't quite keep up with the rest of the faster younger hounds. Older hounds require a lot of special care (and sometimes couches in front of the fire).

In addition, we are bringing in new young hounds from certain lines we like to perpetuate our hunting style and to keep the pack growing.

Our membership consists of all sorts of riders - beginners to professionals, mostly Montana folks and visitors who like to enjoy this gorgeous country from the back of a horse and have an interest in riding, an appreciation for the land and quarry, and like hounds or foxhunting. It is not uncommon to see Cowboys, Indians, and English-clad ladies in our field.

We welcome everyone, and are proud to have a large group of juniors who turn out to enjoy riding with their families to the hounds.

In addition, we have a nice string of horses available for lease, so we can host visitors from all over. We love newbies! All are welcome to learn about this sport. Here, we especially like providing an opportunity for people to try something new and achieve something they didn't think possible.

When we started in 2013, two hounds were easy to care for. They spent a lot of time in the house! Now, we have 22 and our facilities are simply too small and unsuited for a growing pack. Additionally, our registration with MFHA has added great opportunities for us to increase our knowledge and network, and the initiation fee is now due.
We need new kennels!

PLEASE HELP US BUILD OUR KENNELS AND DEVELOP OUR CLUB SO THAT MORE PEOPLE CAN ENJOY THIS WONDEFUL PACK OF HOUNDS AND COME RIDE WITH US! All funds we raise will be used for the construction of the new kennels, the feed and care of our hounds this season, and the registration process with MFHA.

We hope you'll plan to come for a visit to see the hounds, ride with us, and enjoy Big Sky Hounds - Foxhunting Montana-Style. Each donation of $85 will buy a capping fee (a ride with the hunt for non-members). Membership options start at $485, and we'll give you the membership privideges equal to the normal fee plus the fundraising costs. Plus, each membership also comes with a subscribing membership to MFHA and a subscription to their magazine, Covertside.
ALREADY READY FOR YOUR COLORS?! Founding memberships ($5500) earn hunt colors and a memorial brick in the new kennels! (Our colors are sky blue and black...very beautiful, especially on a scarlet collar.)

We appreciate ALL donations! We'll be sure to thank you properly at our Annual Hunt Ball on April 2nd (why don't you join us for the bash?!) and with a thank you card featuring some of the amazing photography taken of Big Sky Hounds.
Our MFHA registartion is due December 31st, we hunt until April, and we plan to break ground on the kennels in May. Until then, the hounds will be hunting their hearts out and we'll be directing every penny we can to the cause.

The Big Sky Hounds thank you for your support!
