Sewer Disaster: Home Inspection Fundraiser
Summary: We are raising funds for our friends and neighbors who were victimized by a major sewer disaster on June 20th. Funds will be used to hire an independent environmental inspector to test four Brazil Street homes for sewage-related toxins, bacteria, and other harmful contaminants.
The Mayor of Melrose has refused to pay for the cost of an environmental inspection, nor will the City’s insurance company pay for the service. Eleven victims, including four children between the ages of 5-7, deserve to feel safe in their homes. They also have a right to know if unseen contaminants are lurking in their homes before spending thousands of dollars to rebuild. Since the City of Melrose -- which ironically has been rated the best place to live in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts -- won’t take care of its own, we are stepping up to do so.

Imagine being at work one day and receiving a phone call from your local police department. Your heart immediately sinks to the bottom of your stomach. Your mind begins to race. You anxiously anticipate every word that is uttered by the voice on the other end of the phone. Was a loved one in an accident? Was my home broken into? Was there a fire at my house? What else could it be?
And then, after what seems like an eternity of painful anticipation, you learn the last thing you ever expected to hear: that your home was infiltrated by vast amounts of raw sewage! An explosion that released gallons upon gallons of contaminated water, only to be followed by an eruption of thick, lava-like sewage. So much sewage that every room of your home was affected, destroying mostly, if not all of your property, including family keepsakes and other personal mementos that can never be replaced. After assessing the damage to your home, you learn that the city’s public works department applied too much pressure when attempting to clear a blockage in the main sewer line on the street. You are told by the city workers on scene that they made a mistake, that they are sorry for what happened, and that the city will take responsibility for what occurred. But shortly thereafter, the same city workers walk back their earlier statements, continuing their work on the street, and offering nothing more than a phone number for a private cleaning and restoration firm to begin the arduous process of cleaning and sanitizing your home. But your home cannot simply be cleaned and sanitized. It is uninhabitable and very likely contains dangerous toxins and bacteria. You and your family are rendered homeless. But somehow, just 8 days later, you are informed by the city’s health inspector that you can and should return to your home. Yet, your home has not been fully cleaned and sanitized, you have no furniture, your walls and floors have been removed, and there has been no testing whatsoever by the city to detect for the presence of sewage-related contaminants known to be dangerous to human health. In light of this, you inform the Mayor that you do not feel safe returning home. Your family members, your neighbors, your city councilor, and countless others, including the city’s legislative body, demand that the Mayor hire an independent environmental specialist to test your home for safety. But the Mayor REFUSES to do so!
Sound like a bad dream? No, this is the real-life experience of 11 individuals (including 4 young children) from 4 families on Brazil Street in Melrose, Massachusetts. And we, a group of more than a dozen residents from Brazil Street, have come together to ensure that our friends and neighbors feel safe and secure before they return to their homes. To do so, with your help, and with the approval and support of the affected residents, we are looking to fund a full-scale environmental inspection of the four homes. The inspection, to be conducted by TRC Companies (www.trccompanies.com), will include visual inspections, moisture surveys, swab testing, and sewage clearance assessments for the presence of residual contamination. Each home will also be provided with a home-specific report to include findings, a description of sampling methods used, and post-testing remediation recommendations. We believe strongly that the victims of this disaster should be able to begin the rebuilding process, return to their homes, and go to bed at night without having to worry about the presence of hidden contaminants that could jeopardize their health.
With your assistance, we hope to raise, within a few short days, the funds needed to have the inspections begin early next week. Our neighbors have waited far too long for this to happen (2 months now!), so please help us give them what they deserve.
We thank you for your consideration.

Raw sewage spewed from the toilets like lava...
It was like something from a horror movie...
Would you feel safe moving back home without an inspection after something like this? Sewage was in every room.
These people lost almost everything, through no fault of their own; let's show them Melrose cares about our own and live up to our city's title as one of the top 10 most desirable cities in the country!
**Any additional funds, if raised over the amount needed, will be distributed between the families for food, replacing their lost belongings and addressing the financial costs they incur from this unexpected disaster.
