Support for Coach Brent Deckert

At midnight on August 16th, which happens to be Coach Deckert’s wedding anniversary, he went in to the ER with a persistent and nagging cough, which included tightness in his lungs.  After many labs, tests, and a biopsy, Brent was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.  The initial diagnosis from the oncologist was that cancer had spread too far, and neither chemotherapy nor radiation was the optimal treatment option.  The doctors said his best course of treatment would be a gene therapy pill, which would only be possible if his DNA sequencing was a match to an existing gene therapy pill.

After much stress and anxiety waiting for the results to come in, 3 weeks later the doctor informed him that his cancer cells did match a gene therapy pill that had only been available on the market for the last few years.

Since Coach Deckert began taking the pills in September, his persistent cough has dramatically improved, and the tightness in his lungs has eased.  He had his first full set of scans 90 days later in December, which showed a significant reduction in the size of the tumor in his lungs, and no signs of disease progression anywhere else!

The doctors are amazed at how well he has been doing with this treatment, and luckily, so far, he has had very few side effects from the pills other than minor aches and pains, but mainly just exhaustion.  He is so very thankful to be able to coach this season without having to take any significant time off and to be feeling as good as can be expected.

The cancer is considered non-curable, so he will take these pills for the rest of his life, as long as they continue to be effective.

After being brought to his knees with the initial diagnosis, he is so grateful and thankful for all the love and support showed throughout the Brandon community as well as across the entire state.

Coach Deckert’s passion is to always improve upon his basketball program and wanting to make sure it’s the best it can be.  This includes working throughout the summer months and donating his earnings back into the program for the betterment of the kids.

One of our goals is to help raise funds to fulfill Coach Deckert’s desire of creating a scholarship fund for players in his basketball program.  The rest of the community is very supportive of his desire, which is typical for him, but they also want to make sure that Coach and his family are taken care of as well.  Our hope is to raise enough funds to accomplish both.

Brent Deckert is a man that gives his all, and has truly become the name behind Lynx basketball.  He’s never been afraid to let his voice be heard, whether it be a positive, or a colorful word!
