Broadwater Action Group
Broadwater Action Group (BAG) has been formed by residents local to the Conservation Areas established between Broadwater Road and New Barns and that at Well Street to do whatever is possible to preserve them and protect against inappropriate development.
Since Berkeley Homes plans to develop 900 homes and two major new access roads through Broadwater Farm's Grade 1 farmland & the Conservation Area were published (TMBC Planning Application 21/02719/OAEA) in October 2021, BAG and its supporters have been busy. BAG has:
* Helped around 1500 people object to TMBC planning department by giving guidance on how to object effectively
* Studied much of the 161 document application & identified many discrepancies
* Engaged with Centre Government, our local MP & the elected leaders of TMBC
* Formulated and submitted objections from each of BAG’s subcommittees (Roads, Heritage and Wildlife) and from the Executive Committee on behalf of members
* 0rganised and run two community events, managed a successful social media campaign, published a calendar, been on TV once and in the papers several times.
To maximise the effectiveness of BAG’s responses, specialist planning lawyers have been engaged to correspond with TMBC on certain relevant matters and a specialist transport consultant retained to prepare a telling traffic assessment which challenges Berkeley Homes’ submission. The process of engaging environmental and geological specialists to dispute other Berkeley Homes claims in a manner that will stand up to legal scrutiny has also started.
BAG’s Committee are optimistic that with proper resourcing we could achieve a positive outcome for the local community although more legal avenues need to be explored so we are now appealing for funds to continue this challenge.
