Cheshire County Bowmen "Project 1440"
Donation protected
Cheshire County Bowmen is a long-established archery club having been founded over 50 years ago and is based in Upton, Chester.
Our members range in age from 11 to over 80 years and all are welcome to shoot. We have archers of all abilities, and welcome those with disabilities as well as able bodied people. All are welcome on the shooting line!
We have been significantly impacted by the restrictions imposed on sports by the Covid-19 pandemic. This has been increasingly difficult as our current home location is reliant on a third party facility which has also suffered restrictions on their business, further hindering our ability to shoot and host competitions which as a result has led to a devastating loss of income.
Our key aim is to raise circa £40,000 over the next few years to allow us to obtain land which will give us a long term and secure home in the Chester area and our own open space where we can continue to grow the club and provide a superb facility for local people .
An open space with unlimited access will mean we can encourage more local people in to the sport including young people and archers with disabilities. It will also support all of its current members and allow us to host numerous competitions througout the year.
We need the support of our friends, families, community and businesses to pull together and help a well established Chester based club ensure its future in an ever growing sport. We are calling this "Project 1440". A World Archery 1440 is a classic archery round used as a qualification round in the Olympics. It is shot over 4 different distances on a single day and has a maximum score of 1440.
In order to hit our target we are hoping to obtain the "equivalent" of 1440 donations of £30.00. (What ever amount you can donate would be hugley appreciated, even a fiver would make it a step closer to our goal). We will of course keep you updated with our ongoing progress as we head towards our goal.
All monies recieved for this project will accounted for and be kept in the CCB bank account and will only be used for this purpose and the development of the club.
If the current situation means a monetary donation is not possible there are still many ways in which you could help to support the club details of which, can be found on our website by clicking here
Archery is a very inclusive sport and promotes all aspects of wellbeing, improving physical and mental health. We have archers who shoot purely for enjoyment and sociability through to international competitors and World and Paralympic champions.
As a club we actively promote archery as a great way to keep active, meet new people and learn new skills. It is a great social sport but we are equally open to those who want to be in their own space. We encourage our members to develop and achieve their best at whichever level of ability they happen to be. No one is excluded and whatever the challenges we try to find a way to make it work for every archer.
We have members shooting all disciplines of archery and all bow types, from traditional English Longbow, Olympic Recurve bows through to high tech compound bows and everything in between. Our club also has a fantastic coaching squad with three County coaches, several several Level 1 Archery GB Coaches who can assist with coaching from social/ beginner standard through to elite competetive archers.
Community Involvment.
Cheshire County Bowmen have actively supported the local community. Since 2004 we have been a key supporter at the annual Rotary District 1180 Fun Disabled Games providing the opportunity to over 300 people with disability to
attend the games and try some archery. Rotary district 1180 covers North Wales, Merseyside and parts ofCheshire, Shropshire and Lancashire.
Our Vision.
Owning our own facility and having access to a club facility 7 days per week 365 days a year will allow the club to provide so much more to its members and to the wider community. Currently we are limited to 6 hours shooting a week indoors and approx 15 hours per week during the outdoor season.
We always welcome new members and each year we run beginner courses. However, we sometimes struggle to provide enough space with the facilities we have with the current member subscription.
Sessions during the weekdays are evenings which can also prohibit younger members who have school commitments or rely on parents to bring them to the club. Having more space will also give much more flexibility to archers who have a disability.
Now more than ever people need to find ways of promoting wellbeing and mental health and archery is one of the perfect sports for this. The sport is very inclusive and has proved to be a great outlet for everyone. Just have a look at some of the testimonials below!.
Having access to a facility at all times will allow us to provide sessions and coaching to people at all times of the day and week and allow the club to grow its member subscriptions as well. We currently have 45 members but with this type of facility we could easily double this number.
We currently provide the coaching resources to the Cheshire Archery Squad for their training sessions and would want to continue and expand on this with our own facility. Cheshire Archery Squad has a superb calibre of archers with several representing Home Nations squads and also Team GB.
Testimonials
H Morgan – Parent of Junior Archer – “My son is 15 and for a while we struggled to find a sport that engaged him. When he was 12 he went on an outward bound course and archery was one of the sports on offer. When he came home he talked about it non-stop. He has been the only one to get a gold! I searched online and was delighted to find CCB had a beginner course with available spaces.
The course was a massive success and as a result my son joined the club and has since shot regularly indoors and outdoors and in competition also. He has won several trophies and achieved a number of County records for Cheshire and has represented Cheshire at Junior level.
Archery really seems to have a place for people like my son who don’t enjoy team sports but still want to compete and participate in a sporting activity. Archery has also helped my son learn to focus and concentrate without distraction and this has had a positive affect on his school work and exams. He would be absolutely heart-broken if he had to stop”.
Ian Finlay – CCB member for 15+ Years – "I have been so fortunate with joining CCB as their infrastructure has helped me develop my skills to compete at the very highest level. The training coaching and advice has helped me achieve a world championship win at the world Firefighter Games in South Korea. I have also represented England at the home Nations Indoor Championship, which, once again we were successful in winning. This year I had been chosen to represent England for the Outdoor Championships but due to COVID19 this will have to be another year.
Archery to me isn’t just a sport. I suffer with depression and have found that the sport and especially CCB as a club has helped me with my condition. I am able to focus my mind and draw on the support of others within our club. It is one of my support networks”.
John Stubbs MBE – “As a member of the British Paralympic team, gold and silver medalist, four times world champion and 23 years on the GB squad and currently selected to go to the Tokyo Games. I have been a social member of Cheshire County Bowmen for some time and I have found the club to be extremely respectful of my disability and the needs that I have to be able to train at the club. Cheshire County Bowmen have all of the equipment I need as a world class archer to maintain my training at world class level. As a grass roots club it has the coaches to help no matter what your standard of archery is and in my opinion is one of the best clubs in Cheshire”.
