On Friday July 20, Kyra received a notice on her Poshmark account that someone wanted to purchase her shoes but they wanted her to send pictures via email. She agreed and sent them along. After chatting back and forth the woman who provided her Facebook profile and xyz stated that she wanted to pay via check. Feeling like there really wasn’t anything to it Kyra went ahead and agreed to send the shoes once she received the check and it cleared her bank account. Once the check arrived it was a cashiers check and was for over the amount. Kyra then received a frantic call from the women stating that it was her daughters check and that she needed to give them money back to her daughter ASAP. Kyra agreed since it was a cashiers check to go ahead and cash the check and send the money back since the check cleared. All would have seemed well except days later the bank came back and said that cashiers check was fraudulent. The bank left the responsibility for Kyra to pay the funds including overdraft. When the police were informed they said this happened very frequently and there is nothing that can be done. Kyra is now left with a negative bank account and in tears over the whole ordeal.
Kyra’s heart was to help this poor woman who had made a mistake. She thought that since the check had clear and it was a cashiers check that it was all ok. Unfortunately she is now left with no money for the bare necessities as she struggles to make ends meet through nursing school.
Please educate your teens and collage aged children about these kinds of things. A lot of younger kids are using apps like Poshmark and Mercari to sell and swap clothes and there are scam artists wanting to take advantage of the most vulnerable of people.
To some this may seem like common sense but to many of our children it is not because they can’t fathom a person being this vindictive. This learning lesson will be one that Kyra remembers for the rest of her life. We don’t want to leave it at just Kyra though. Please share this message out to your social feed and let others know this kind of thing is happening. Let’s use this to educate our youth.
If you feel it in your heart to help, even $10 would buy Kyra lunch for a day while she try’s to recover what she has lost.
