Hi, I’m Dana. I’m 14 years old, and I’m the founder of Cookies4Cures, a nonprofit that raises money for research into rare pediatric diseases. I want to introduce you to my friend, Sophie. Sophie is six years old and lives in Boulder.

^This is my friend, Sophie

Sophie has a really rare and really scary disease. It’s called MCTO. It stands for Multicentric Carpotarsal Osteolysis, which means it’s a problem with her bones. In a healthy person, your bones are alive and the cells need to replace themselves to keep your bones strong. Because of a genetic mutation, Sophie’s bones can’t do this. And there just isn’t a not-scary way to describe this — Sophie’s bones are going to dissolve, and it’s already started.

^These are Sophie’s hands. The bones in her hands have started to dissolve because of MCTO.

So Sophie’s mom and dad are funding research to find a cure and we are going to help! We need to raise a lot of money really fast because the faster we find a cure, the better Sophie’s life will be. Right now, she can still do lots of things like walk and play. I don’t want her to lose that.

Even though this disease is super rare (only 30 people have it!), other diseases share a similar pathway. The research that helps Sophie will hopefully help a lot of other people, too.

Cookies4Sophie is going to raise $50,000 to help fund research to save Sophie’s bones. Our plan is to bake A LOT of cookies. Cookies4Cures has already baked 22,000 cookies and raised over $350,000 for other rare pediatric diseases, so I know we can do this!

^ This is me with A LOT of cookies!!!

* All cookies are homemade, made by kids in home kitchens. We will all wear masks and be extremely careful.
* Unfortunately, we can’t accommodate any dietary restrictions or preferences.
* You’ll need to pick your cookies up at Santo on the designated pick up day during a pick up window.

^ This is me baking cinnamon rose cookies, one of my favs. I have a lot of favorites!

I hope you will join us in trying to give my friend, Sophie, a miracle. Everything we accomplish is because of our amazing community of bakers, sellers, and cookie lovers. Thank you for being a part of our story!!!

With hope, butter, and love,
Dana, Sophie, and the Cookies4Cures kids
