Over Memorial Day Weekend DJ had a tragic accident while diving into a lake. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury along with fractures to his C4, C5 and C6 vertebrae - leaving him presently paralyzed from his upper chest down. DJ was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital and underwent emergency surgery the following day. DJ is currently still at Rhode Island Hospital and will be there until he is capable of being moved to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston to begin his rehabilitation.
Anyone who knows DJ knows how active he is and how he’s focused his life around sports, particularly baseball. Growing up in Westport and Dartmouth, DJ made many friends playing baseball, football, and basketball. As a student at Dartmouth High School he also played baseball and ran track. He continued his career as a baseball player at Westfield State University during his freshmen and sophomore years before transferring to Bridgewater State University. He’s an outfielder for the Acushnet Aztecs of the Cranberry Baseball League where he plays summer ball. At Bridgewater, he is pursuing a B.S. in Physical Education and had planned to continue his baseball career at BSU this coming year.
DJ has faced unexpected hurdles while at Rhode Island Hospital and has already overcome many. He will certainly face more as his recovery continues. However, one thing that has remained constant is DJ’s remarkable strength, unwavering patience, positive attitude and will to fight.
DJ and our family are extremely appreciative of the immense outpouring of support from family and friends near and far. It’s comforting for us to know that neither DJ, nor our family, are going at this alone. Countless people have asked the question, “What can we do to help?” We ask for your continued well wishes, positive thoughts, and prayers. If you would like to make a donation it would be greatly appreciated. As we are faced with the uncertainty of DJ’s rehabilitation needs and the encompassing medical expenses to come, we are focusing on taking this one day at a time. Thank you for keeping DJ in your thoughts and prayers.
