Einsatz für die Demokratie: Sinti-und-Roma-Denkmal retten

Gemeinsamer Kampf für den Erhalt des Denkmals für die ermordeten Sinti und Roma Europas

Im Herzen von Berlin wurde 2012 das Denkmal für die im Nationalsozialismus ermordeten Sinti* und Roma* Europas eingeweiht. Es ist für die ganze Gesellschaft ein bedeutsamer Ort der Demokratie und des Gedenkens. Seit Jahren ist das Denkmal durch Planungen für den Bau einer neuen S-Bahn-Linie bedroht – und seit Jahren kämpfen zahlreiche zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen für den Erhalt des Denkmals.

Auch der Schöpfer des Denkmals, der israelische Künstler Dani Karavan, erklärte gegenüber dem Tagesspiegel im Juni 2020: „Wenn es jemand wagt, einen Teil des künstlerischen Ensembles des Denkmals zu berühren, werde ich persönlich kommen und es mit meinem Körper schützen, den Angreifer verklagen und einen internationalen Skandal auslösen“.

Mit großem Engagement führt die Familie des mittlerweile verstorbenen Künstlers Dani Karavan diesen Kampf mit Aktivist*innen aus den Sinti*- und Roma*-Communities sowie der weiteren Zivilgesellschaft. Nun läuft das Planfeststellungsverfahren für den Bau der S-Bahn-Trasse, die direkt unterhalb des Denkmals verlaufen soll. Nicht nur, dass das Gedenken an die Opfer des NS-Terrors hiermit auf Jahre in einem unerträglichen Maß behindert wird, vielmehr wird das Mahnmal durch den Bauprozess nachhaltig beschädigt.

Unzählige Menschen haben ehrenamtlich bereits viel Zeit und Energie in den Erhalt des Denkmals investiert. Hinzu kommen hohe Kosten für anwaltliche Beratung und Begleitung, die nun verstärkt erforderlich ist, um das Denkmal zu schützen und ggf. rechtliche Schritte einzuleiten.

Das Denkmal: Ein zentraler Ort der Erinnerung

Das Denkmal im Berliner Tiergarten besteht aus einer Lichtung, einem Ort der stillen Kontemplation und innerer Anteilnahme. In der Mitte befindet sich ein Brunnen mit einem Stein, auf dem täglich eine frische Blume liegt. Für die Angehörigen der Minderheit der Sinti* und Roma* ist es ein sensibler Ort der Erinnerungen an das Leid der Opfer und den eigenen Verlust – ein symbolisches Grab ihrer Angehörigen, die in Vernichtungslagern verbrannt oder auf Wiesen begraben wurden.

Es ist ebenfalls ein Ausdruck historischer und politischer Verantwortung in der Gegenwart, in Deutschland wie auch in Europa. Der geplante Bau der S-Bahn entehrt daher nicht nur die Opfer, die Überlebenden und deren Nachkommen. Er greift auch das Engagement der deutschen Gesellschaft für die Erinnerung an die vergangenen Verbrechen fundamental an.

Für das Bauvorhaben müsste alter Baumbestand in großem Umfang weichen, der für Dani Karavans künstlerischen Entwurf zentral ist. Ohne diese Bäume wären die einzigartige Atmosphäre und die Ruhe der Gedenkstätte zwischen Reichstagsgebäude und Brandenburger Tor dauerhaft zerstört.

Commitment to Democracy: Save the Sinti and Roma Memorial

Joint fight for the preservation of the memorial

The Memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe Murdered under National Socialism was unveiled in the heart of Berlin in 2012. It is an important place of democracy and commemoration for society as a whole. For years, the memorial has been threatened by plans to build a new S-Bahn line – and for years, numerous civil society organisations have been fighting to preserve the memorial.

Also the creator of the Memorial, the Israeli artist Dani Karavan, told the Tagesspiegel in June 2020: "If anyone dares to touch any part of the monument's artistic ensemble, I will personally come and protect it with my body, sue the attacker and cause an international scandal".

The family of the now deceased creator of the monument is continuing this fight with great commitment – hand in hand with activists from the Sinti and Roma communities and further civil society. The plan approval procedure for the construction of the S-Bahn line, which is to run directly beneath the memorial, is now in progress. Not only will the commemoration of the victims of Nazi terror be hindered to an intolerable extent for years to come, but the memorial will also be permanently damaged by the construction process.

Countless people have already devoted a lot of time and energy to preserving the Memorial. In addition, there are high costs for legal advice and support, which is now increasingly required in order to protect the memorial and take legal action if necessary.

The memorial: An extremely important place of remembrance

The memorial in Berlin's Tiergarten consists of a clearing, a place of quiet contemplation and inner empathy. In the centre is a well with a stone on which a fresh flower is placed every day. For the members of the Sinti and Roma minority, it is a sensitive place of remembrance of the suffering of the victims and their own loss – a symbolic grave of their relatives who were burnt in extermination camps or buried in meadows.

It is also an expression of historical and political responsibility in the present, in Germany as well as in Europe. The planned construction of the S-Bahn therefore not only dishonours the victims, the survivors and their descendants. It also fundamentally attacks German society's commitment to remember past crimes.

The construction project would require the removal of a large number of old trees, which are of central importance to Dani Karavan's artistic design. Without these trees, the unique atmosphere and tranquillity of the memorial site between the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate would be permanently destroyed.
