Let’s help Don Kutschall deal with his race against cancer.
Don is somewhat unique in that he has deep roots in both the arts and auto racing, two of the most supportive communities one could ask for.
We are asking everyone who knows Don, particularly those who have had personal and professional interactions with him, to donate to his recovery and help alleviate the added financial stress of an already stressful time.
About 4 weeks ago Don was diagnosed with HPV Stage 4, Squamous Cell Carcinoma; a tumor at the base of his tongue. Happily, other than a lump on his neck he has been asymptomatic to date. That will start to change when his 5 day per week radiation treatments and once per week chemo treatments begin on January 27, with a current, planned ending, around March 11. After the tumor has been eradicated, Don will also require a neck resection to remove lymph nodes near the tumor - though this should be a fairly simple procedure with a very quick recovery. On January 13 Don had surgery to implant a chemo port, a Gastro feeding tube and examine the tumor. Since then they have had to redo the Gtube port several times due to complications.
Don enters upon this journey with some definite advantages. He is otherwise healthy, has the less aggressive HPV cancer, a positive attitude, a stellar group of physicians, insurance, a loving wife, faithful dog and very supportive friends.
What he lacks is the ability to work over the next 2-3 months. While some medical expenses will be covered, the balance will not. As you know, he is a self-employed professional driver, racing coach and instructor and is only paid when he works. Don and his wife anticipate a shortfall in excess of $20,000.
