EarthChange: Indigenous Leadership for a Healthier Seven Generations
Help fund Indigenous youth and cultural leaders to participate in the 44th Anniversary International Treaty Conference and to participate in discussions and develop collective strategies to defend Indigenous Peoples’ rights to food, water, sovereignty and Treaties.
The Project
Join EarthChange in supporting a unique cultural exchange opportunity among Indigenous leaders, elders and youth to advance the preservation and revitalization of traditional knowledge and practices for a healthier seven generations!
EarthChange, a program of the non-profit InnerCHANGE WORKS, is working with OneFire Associates, the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC), and the Sicangu Lakota Treaty Council to support the participation of Indigenous youth and cultural leaders at the 44th Anniversary International Treaty Conference “Treaty Right to Food, Treaty Right to Water: Hecel Mitakuye Oyasin Wiconipi Ktelo” (So That All My Relatives Will Live). The conference will be held on June 21 – 24, 2018 at, Mato Paha (Bear Butte), South Dakota.
The 44th Anniversary International Treaty Conference will bring together international Indigenous leaders to develop joint strategies and positions on key concerns including the restoration of traditional Indigenous Governments and legal systems; food sovereignty; environmental and reproductive health; rights of Indigenous women and children; protection of sacred places and cultural rights; reducing extractive industries and climate change impacts; and climate change adaptation strategies.
The voice and participation of our most precious resources—Indigenous youth and elders—are vital in developing solutions to the critical human and environmental health issues that our future generations face. Inter-generational and cultural sharing are an essential aspect in these dialogues.
What Your Funding Will Support
EarthChange is raising funds to bring up to 7 Indigenous cultural leaders from Central and South America and up to 20 youth from Tribal Nations across the United States to participate in the 2018 Treaty Conference.
The amount of funds raised will determine the number of youth and cultural leaders we are able to support in attending the 44th Anniversary International Treaty Conference. Funding will support travel, meals and lodging for selected participants.
Why Fund Us?
Increased youth and Indigenous participation from in and outside the US in the Treaty Conference will impact both local community and international advocacy efforts for food and water sovereignty and security.
· Youth presenters will participate in a key panel session, “Indigenous Youth in the Movement to Defend our Futures,” and will also be invited to participate in the Youth Commission as well as other Commissions to ensure that the youth voice is included in the final creation of conference resolutions adopted June 24th, during IITC’s General Assembly.
· Youth will be working with Tribal elder mentors to support intergenerational transmission of knowledge throughout the conference. Participating youth will gain critical knowledge and leadership skills by working with participating elders to be able to serve their own community into the future.
· The resolutions adopted at the Treaty Conference will benefit from the increased input of youth participants’ priorities and innovations, as well as the insights and experiences of Indigenous cultural leaders and elders from many Nations.
· Bringing cultural leaders from Guatemala, Colombia, and Bolivia to the Treaty Conference will strengthen IITC’s priorities for developing joint strategies for food and water sovereignty and security. The representatives selected to attend are leaders in their communities, traditional knowledge keepers and advocates for Indigenous rights.
The International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) is an organization of Indigenous Peoples from North, Central, South America, the Caribbean and the Pacific working for the Sovereignty and Self Determination of Indigenous Peoples and the recognition and protection of Indigenous Rights, Treaties, Traditional Cultures and Sacred Lands.
