Dyslexia BC: Empower Change

Hello,

I'm Cathy McMillan, the Founding Member of Dyslexia BC. As a parent of two adult children diagnosed with dyslexia and navigating dyslexia myself, our journey has fueled my passion for advocating change. I am excited to share that our recent visit to the BC Legislature on October 3, 2023, during Dyslexia Awareness Month, was a tremendous success!

During this visit, we had the opportunity to kick off Dyslexia Awareness Month in style. Several individuals, including students of various ages from Kamloops, Kelowna, Vancouver, and Calgary, spoke eloquently about the pressing need for improved access to education, community, and the workplace for the 1 in 5 people with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

In addition to our legislative visit, we released a comprehensive report on November 9, 2023, titled "Educational Expectations and Challenges: Dyslexia in British Columbia." While this is a significant milestone, our work is far from over. We are determined to continue our efforts to convince the government to create a more inclusive environment for students and individuals with dyslexia.

As a grassroots non-profit organization comprised entirely of volunteers, we are reaching out for your support. While our initial Go Fund Me campaign aimed to fund trips to Victoria, we now find ourselves in need of funding for essential tools. These include our website, Zoom, and other communication tools vital for conveying our message and advancing our advocacy initiatives.
