Hi Everyone! Our names are Abby Colburn, Eric Burfeind, Derek RoyDavis, and Mariko Maxwell and we are studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. During our semester, we are taking part in an activist project by volunteering our time with a local youth soccer club, the Fire Fighters Football Club. This soccer club takes place in one of the various townships called Khayelitsha, which is the second largest township in Cape Town with over 800,000 residents who live in extremely impoverished conditions. This youth soccer club, ranging from ages 9 to 18, is a way to keep the kids away from the violence, drug use, and gangsterism that unfortunately exist in their community. We attend weekly games and practices to support the kids as their parents cannot take time off or fund transportation to attend. Together, we create practice plans, help coach, and interact with the players when they’re not on the field. We are trying to raise money for the organization as a whole because many of these kids cannot afford the necessary equipment to participate in soccer games such as cleats, socks, and shin guards. We also hope to put money towards tournament entry fees and food for the tournaments as the kids often go entire tournament days without eating. Any donation to this cause would mean so much to the kids and would go a long way in helping further their soccer careers while leading them towards a more promising future. Thank you so much!
