Emergency flood relief - villages north DR Congo
The RainShine Foundation in conjunction with the Red Cross, Dungu, Demoratic Republic of Congo are raising funds to provide emergency flood assistance to villages in north, eastern DR Congo.
On the road to Faradji, DR Congo
Two weeks ago a one in twenty year flood event happened sweeping away homes, crops, and flooding towns -> Amadi, Epi, Mamili, Poko, Faradje, Dungu. Access has been cut off to some of these towns, in particular Amadi, Mamili, and Epi.
We are preparing out first airlift of blankets, food, medicine, water, chlorine, tents and other supplies to Amadi. We could not do this without the assistance of the Red Cross in Dungu, as many of the existing poor roads are completely impassable.
Kpoko River just before Poko. I have been over this bridge and it is quite a few meters high!
The doctor in the Amadi hospital has advised us they have almost run out of medical supplies. The hospital disparately needs medical supplies to manage outbreaks of Dystentry and Thypoid. We know material from ground latrines has infiltrated the flood waters, there is no fresh drinking water, and no chlorine to disinfect available water.
We are against the clock, so this is going to be a short and sharp campaign, as we need to do our 1st airlift next week!! And a second airlift to the next priority area.
People's homes in Amadi.
I have been involved with the RainShine Foundation since 2012, and I have been working in these villages and towns since 2018. Our normal work in DR Congo is in community rural development: providing education and basic health care, working with communities to protect their forests and natural resources, and building small community infrastructure. This is our website:
We are working with the Red Cross for this appeal, because they are experts in delivering emergency responses around the world. Here is a video showing the Dungu Red Cross team disinfecting a school building in Dungu after the flood water subsided at this school. Students cannot go back into the buildings until all the rooms are disinfected to remove any disease.
Last week RainShine rebuilt the 1st Grade Ngilima school children's grass classroom, which was destroyed by the flood. The children had to take their classes in the open air. We are in the process of building brick, timber and tin school buildings for this primary school, but some of the students still need to take classes in grass huts until the 2nd school building is completed.
The children were very pleased to have a classroom again.
This flood event is just another set back to some of the poorest people in the world. I am sending a heart felt Call for Action. It means a lot to me to provide support to these communities to aleviate the displacement and sickness caused by the floods.
All donations $2.00 and over done within Australia are tax deducable.
