As the wife of Fred Badger, I would like to tell you about my loving and incredible husband. He has been an illuminating source of light in the lives of many people, especially within his community. Fred has worked 35 years at the Sunshine Children’s Rehab center in Ossining, NY directing activities to young children with disabilities. He has poured his heart into his career which has ignited inspiration for my family and me. In addition, Fred has worked for 9 years at the Ossining, NY parks & recreation department as a father figure and mentor for the children in his community. It brings such joy that children he worked with 35 years ago, take the time to visit Fred and demonstrate the strong adult they have now become.
I have been married to Fred for 22 years and we have stuck together to create a loving family with each other and our children. Fred is the world to his children; Derek, 21 and Kimberly, 16. He has raised two incredible children that I am so profoundly inspired by every day. Derek, a ray of light always making people smile and Kimberly, one of the brightest people I know. We enter into this next stage of our lives with great fear and heartache.
Fred has been diagnosed with life threatening heart failure. A heart that has been so strong for our family is now unable to sustain his life. He has just been admitted to the hospital to await a new heart. We are uncertain how long Fred will be away and fear every day. With great sadness, Fred had to leave behind his family, friends, and the passion for his careers of helping his community. The struggle without our family’s main support system has left us with only three month’s rent. Kimberly enters her senior year of high school, without her father and it breaks my heart every day.
Please take a moment to reflect on Fred’s caring and selfless nature and think about those that are dearest to his heart; his family. We are reaching out to the community to ask for your support during these difficult and heartbreaking times. Please share this story with family, friends, and loved ones as we know Fred has touched the lives of so many people.
Thanks
Karen

From The Sunshine Children's Home and Rehab Center
Fred Badger has meant the world to the children families and staff at Sunshine. Fred has devoted 35 years of his career caring for children with a range of medical diagnosis and disability. As part of the Therapeutic recreation team, Fred spent countless hours mentoring children in many ways. Sunshine is a unique place for special children who have survived catastrophic accident injury and illness'. These are children who require a high level of medical, and therapeutic care and rehabilitation. Fred's ability to drive the mission to provide a second home and high quality of life for these children and these families is unparalleled. He makes them laugh by providing fun filled activities and programs that bring both comfort and joy. Therapeutic Play is vital part of the healing for these children who have been through so much in their short lives. Fred has been instrumental in creating this important aspect to their day to day. Fred's children, Derrick and Kimberly have also been a part of the Sunshine family throughout the years volunteering their time at our special events.
We have watched our friend Fred go from a vibrant healthy team member to a critically ill man in need of the help and support that he has so freely given to others throughout his career. His "Sunshine Family" has united together to help him and his beautiful family during this very difficult time. They need our help and we are committed to both raising funds for them and spreading awareness of their need.
